TrackMyDistance guide

A simpler way to measure a walk

TrackMyDistance is a web-based distance tracker for people who want to open a page and measure their next outing. There is no app-store download required.

What you can do

Record an outdoor walk, cycle or drive with your phone’s location feature. See distance, active time and speed, review saved activities, and use goals and progress views. You can try three guest activities before creating a free email account to continue.

The public calculators are free and require neither an account nor location access. They convert information you enter; they do not track you.

How the numbers are made

  • Distance: adds distances between accepted GPS points, filtering poor accuracy, small movements and implausible speeds. Filtering can also miss real short movements.
  • Walking steps: estimates the recorded distance divided by a fixed 0.762 m step length. This is not a sensor-based step count.
  • Walking calories: uses distance in kilometers × weight in kilograms × 0.7. The calorie calculator explains the assumptions.
  • Cycling calories: uses duration, weight and an intensity category based on average speed. It is also an estimate.

Where the tracker has limits

Keep the browser visible and screen awake. Background and locked-screen tracking are not guaranteed. Indoor walking, treadmill use, dense buildings and small loops can give unsuitable GPS readings. Actual performance has not been validated on every phone; test a short walk on your own device.

Accounts, data and sharing

The tracker creates a guest session when you open it. Saved activities and routes are stored through the app’s server and database, associated with your account. Unsynced route points can also be stored in your browser. Your weight preference is stored on your device.

If you enable live sharing, anyone with the link can view the shared activity. Do not post a link if you do not want others to see that route. Search-engine noindex settings discourage indexing; they are not access controls.

You can delete individual saved activities from their detail pages. Registered users can request account and data deletion from Profile. Clearing browser storage can remove your local guest session; it is not a substitute for deleting saved server-side activities.

Start with a short test

Try a familiar outdoor route and check the result. The walking setup guide explains permissions and common problems. For a walk you already finished, try the steps converter or pace calculator.

A walk starts with one step.
