Walking pace vs. average walking speed
Pace tells you how long one kilometer or mile takes. Speed tells you how far you travel in one hour. A smaller pace number means faster walking; a larger speed number means faster walking.
Pace (min/km) = time (minutes) ÷ distance (km)
Speed (km/h) = distance (km) ÷ time (hours)
A 5 km walk in 60 minutes has a pace of 12:00 min/km, about 19:19 min/mile, and an average speed of 5 km/h (3.11 mph). A result of 12:30 means 12 minutes and 30 seconds, not 12.30 minutes.
Should I include my breaks?
Use moving time to compare your walking pace between outings. Use total elapsed time, including stops, if you want the overall pace of the trip. Label your choice when comparing results so you do not mix the two.
Use pace to estimate a future walk
At 12 minutes per kilometer, a 3 km walk takes about 36 minutes of walking. Add time for stops, crossings, hills or route-finding. The calculator does not account for terrain and is not a navigation or safety estimate.
