How steps convert to kilometers and miles
Multiply the number of steps by the length of one step. The default is 76.2 cm (30 inches), an editable assumption also used by the tracker. Your own step length may be different.
Distance (km) = steps × step length (cm) ÷ 100,000
Divide kilometers by 1.609344 to get miles. With a 76.2 cm step length, 5,000 steps is 3.81 km, or about 2.37 miles.
| Steps | Kilometers | Miles |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 0.76 | 0.47 |
| 5,000 | 3.81 | 2.37 |
| 10,000 | 7.62 | 4.73 |
Measure your own step length
- Choose a straight, measured stretch, such as 20 meters.
- Walk it normally while counting individual steps.
- Divide the distance by your step count. For 20 meters in 28 steps, one step is about 71.4 cm.
- Repeat a few times and use the average in the calculator.
Here “step” means one footfall to the next, not a full two-step stride. Walking faster, climbing hills or taking short indoor steps can change the conversion.
A calculator is not a pedometer
This tool converts steps you already counted. It does not read your phone’s motion sensor. The live tracker does the reverse: it measures GPS distance and estimates steps. Neither is an automatic all-day step counter.
