How this walking calorie estimate works
The calculator uses the app’s simple rule: distance in kilometers × body weight in kilograms × 0.7. Pounds are converted to kilograms first. The result is rounded to the nearest kilocalorie (kcal), commonly called a food calorie.
Estimated kcal = distance (km) × weight (kg) × 0.7
For example, a 70 kg person walking 5 km gets an estimate of 245 kcal. Doubling the distance doubles this formula’s result; that does not mean actual energy use follows it exactly.
What the estimate does not know
This distance-only rule does not measure heart rate, incline, walking economy, carried weight or individual fitness. The coefficient is the app’s simplifying assumption, not a personalized or clinically validated equation. It does not separately calculate resting and active calories.
Use it as a rough activity comparison, not to plan medical care, weight loss or how much to eat. A wearable or a more detailed model may give a different result. Do not treat one number as an exact measurement.
Walking and cycling use different estimates
This calculator is for walking only. In the tracker, cycling estimates also use duration and a speed-based activity-intensity category. Do not use walking distance alone to estimate a bike ride.
The calculator runs in your browser. Its inputs are not submitted to your account. In the tracker, you can change the weight used for activity estimates in Profile.
